Franklin County Demographics

To break down large populations into manageable chunks, the United States Census Bureau assigns areas to different levels, such as ZIP codes and census tracts. ZIP codes are created and used by the Postal Service to describe areas where mail is commonly delivered; this code is generally included in a person's address, and can cover many neighborhoods, villages, and/or cities. A census tract is smaller than a ZIP code, and usually covers a few thousand people in a specific area. Because of this, a census tract often represents a neighborhood or group of neighborhoods, depending on how many people live in an area. ZIP codes and census tracts can be useful tools for looking at data, since these can be used to describe patterns in distinct groups or areas.
